"AN elderly woman was crushed to death by a bus on downtown Yan'an Road E. yesterday morning, causing a 40-minute traffic jam at the Yan'an Road E. Tunnel.

The cause of the accident was under investigation.

According to witnesses, the victim, more than 80 years old, might have run the red light.

The accident happened about 8am at Yan'an Road E. and Zhejiang Road M. in downtown Huangpu District at the Bund. The victim, not identified, and a young man were trying to cross Yan'an Road before the coming No. 145 bus.

Witnesses said the young man quickly made it across but the old woman failed and was knocked out by the bus, which braked hard but couldn't avoid hitting her.

The victim's shoes, glasses and vegetables she had just bought from a wet market were scattered on the ground.

The old woman was pronounced dead after being rushed to the hospital.

The accident caused serious traffic congestion in the Yan'an Road E. Tunnel and the Bund Tunnel until the bus was pulled away at 9:20am, police said."
